Tinsel, that sparkling, glittering, festive foil that we decorate our Christmas tree (and house) with has its origins in Germany, way back in 1610. But all those hundreds of years ago, it was made of silver, not the cheaper version that we have today (that came about at the beginning of the twentieth century).

Although the PVC type that we have today is safer, less expensive, and longer lasting than the original silver (and copper and lead) tinsel, it doesn’t hang on the Christmas tree in quite the same way as its older counterparts. And that seems to be a bit of a shame.
